The NSW Government wants to make it easier for people to trade and profit off native birds. This is a clear step towards deregulation that favours the 'pet' trade industry.
Under the proposed scheme, people would be allowed to keep and trade up to 30 birds of certain native species without a licence. Our understanding is that certain reptiles and amphibians might be next, if the new scheme goes ahead.
The new scheme will mean increased risks to welfare and irresponsible breeding. It will also make the job of wildlife rescuers and carers that much harder.
There is no excuse for a trade in wildlife.
By signing the petition below, you'll be telling the NSW Government that native birds belong in the wild, not in the pet trade industry.
