Penalties for the sexual abuse of animals in Australia are pathetically low. We need an urgent legislative overhaul to ensure animals are protected from these heinous crimes.
Every state and territory needs:
- Increased penalties and jail time for the sexual abuse of animals
- Automatic lifetime animal bans for anyone convicted of bestiality (currently only law in NSW)
- Bans on the production, possession and distribution of bestiality material (currently only law in NSW and TAS)
- Interstate recognition of bestiality convictions so abusers can’t move to another state to get access to animals
- Federal funding for crackdowns on underground bestiality rings
